The Powerful combination of ingredients of this Papaya, Ginger and Maca Detox Juice

“Maca powder” is a powerful root from the Andes, mostly Peru, that is known to reduce cortisol and therefore belly fat, amongst other benefits.
It is native to the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia and also cultivated in some parts of Brazil.
According to different sources, Maca has been cultivated  “for approximately 2,000 years. Maca has been an important traditional food and medicinal plant in its  growing region, where it is well-known and celebrated. It is regarded as a highly nutritious, energy-imbuing food, and as a medicine that enhances strength, endurance and also acts as an aphrodisiac. During Spanish colonization Maca was even used as currency.”

Maca powder is also known to help to reduce tummy fat. Maca is high in fibers, such as cellulose and lignins, which improve gut health. Fiber, as we all know, is also an effective tummy filler, which can reduce hunger between meals. It is also packed with proteins and good oils to keep you fed for longer.

I found organic Maca at Bulk Barn (Ontario – Canada) but any Health food store will have it. It is not cheap but the fine powder goes a long way if you are just taking 1 tsp a day. It is said to be bitter but I didn’t taste it, 1 tsp is not much. You also can find it at Amazon.

In case you’e considering taking Maca Powder for other health benefits, find some very useful information in this article, including the guidelines to start taking a bigger amount safely.

I grew up drinking fruit juices. Every kid in Brazil does. Freshly squeezed orange juice is something that the majority of children have every. Every family has a juicer sitting on the counter top, along with a blender, for easy juice preparation.

Nothing new when fruit abundance is part of daily life, cheap source of vitamins and an awesome way to fight the hot temperatures. The normal statement for most Brazilian families is “no pops are allowed ever”.

If you are not counting calories, double the amount of orange juice, instead of using water and use honey or Agave nectar. Pure boost of energy to start your day!

Papaya, ginger and Maca Detox Juice

2 portions

1 1/2 cup of papaya* peeled and diced
1 cup orange juice
1 cup water
1 1/2 tsp fresh ginger grated (or more if you enjoy the ginger pungent flavour)
1 tbs lemon juice
2 tsp Maca powder
2 tbs sugar substitute or honey or Agave nectar

Blend everything and serve immediately over ice.

* tip: let your papaya ripen on the counter for a few days if you buy it green, which is normally the case. To do so, use a knife to make 4 length wise cuts, just to break the skin. You will see a little bit of the skin juice sipping out, which will greatly improve the ripening process (2 to 3 days). Watch it every day and when is nicely orange, softer but still firm, put it the fridge, where it will last up to 3 to 4 days. If you are not using the whole fruit at once, wrap it in wrapping plastic while in the fridge.
Papaya is an essential fruit in our fridge. Although it is a bit expensive, it can last up for a week for nice additions to your meals. I add it to salads or have it plain as a dessert or snack.
